Help! I’m going to the gym.

Something I would never pay for out of my regular budget, I was able to make a deal and trade some of my freelance work for a couple of gym memberships for my husband and me.

I’m not entirely comfortable with the idea of going to the gym. My plan for easing into the situtation is to begin on the cardio machines the first few times, observing the “lay of the land,” if it were.

The gym (completely co-ed) has all the amenities (including a very nice daycare) and there are several locations around town so I will be able to fit in some fitness between clients on slow days.

Any tips for being new to a gym? How to get the most out of your time there?

Good idea to start with cardio workouts, just don’t get stuck there, there’s much more advantages going to the gym. Definitely weights are one of them. If you signed the membership with gym, ask for trainer’s consultation. Every gym should provide it for the beginners for free. It should around 30-60min. They make you a program and teach how to properly perform exercises. You can ask them all the questions you have during that time :-) And, please, don’t be intimidated by the people around you, you are there to work out, not to worry what others think or do ;-) All the best luck!

what a great deal! I suggest checking out some classes, like spinning or yoga. Have fun!

Above all, focus on the reasons that lead you to exercise in the first place, not on what anyone else might think. The best insurance for continuing to work out and get healthy is to do it for the right reasons, and not worry about ancillary crap! With that said, try to take advantage of a trainer’s plan (it should be free, as mentioned above), and do cardio and light weights. You will see results if you keep with it! Good luck…

Think of the gym as an extension of your life. Whatever you were doing before you went to the gym is probably what you should do while you’re at the gym. If you did bodyweight stuff at home, do the same movements but use weights. If you ran at home, then run on the treadmill. Taking classes is a good suggestion, my gym offers a bunch of different ones and it seems like people enjoy themselves. Bottom line, people are not going to stare, and there are tons of people who are just as new. So be yourself and have fun, hopefully some of their motivation and everything will rub off. Good things.

I think going to the gym is really something you have to try to see if it suits you – and a lot depends on how good a gym the place turns out to be, too! Good luck and best of success!

Latch on to a trainer like a leach if one is available, A good trainer will help motivate you and keep you going when you think you can`t.
